In addition to his job of head of operations at WEZO, Mathieu has always been an active volunteer for the local hockey association. In 2011, Mathieu was knighted as a member in the Order of Orange-Nassau, for being of exceptional service to society.
After retiring, Mathieu become even more active in the voluntary sector, taking on a roll at the Food Bank, as well as at a hospice in Raalte.
The Optical Foundation is fortunate enough to have been able to count on Mathieu’s active involvement since 2006. Whether it was the orange spray-painting of spectacles for ‘Koninginnedag’ in 2009 (i.e. the former Dutch Queen’s birthday celebrations) or the organising of a shipment of equipment to Ghana, he is always there for the Foundation.
In 2007, Mathieu visited the project in Ghana and since that visit, Ghana has a special place in his heart. Not only because of the work done by The Optical Foundation but also party because he was introduced to the CAS project (Catholic Action for Street Children) run by the FIC Brothers, which also stuck a chord with him. He has since restored many tools and shipped them to Ghana for the CAS project.
In 2013 The Optical Foundation was honoured to announce Mathieu as an official board member.
