Esma Aygun is orthoptist working as a teacher at the faculty of orthoptics at the Hogeschool Utrecht. In addition, she also works as an orthoptist for the eye care center ‘Visie’.

Esma and Carolina first met in 1999 when they both started their studies at the Hogeschool Utrecht. Their paths would continually cross in the following years and Carolina’s enthusiasm for The Optical Foundation’s project would eventually rub off on Esma, who in 2011 decided to travel to Ghana and she spend her summer holidays working as a volunteer on The Optical Foundation the project.

During the period from 10 July to 1 August 2011, Esma and the team she had at the time, screened a total of 470 children of which 25 were provided with a pair of glasses and 4 teachers were also prescribed glasses. Additionally with her experience as a teacher she provided a guest orthoptics lecture at the University of Cape Coast.
