New unused Frames
The Optical Foundation’s invites opticians, frame suppliers and manufacturers to donate any frames that are not likely to get sold.
If your company would like to donate frames, please contact us using the form on the right and provide as much information as possible.
The Optical Foundation cannot accept used glasses and frames. We understand that many people would like to donate their used glasses to charity because the frames may still look fine. However especially in the case of children’s spectacles, even though the frame might still look alright, everyday use will have caused structural changes and metal fatigue, making them more at risk of breakage when mounting new lenses in them. If the frame breaks during this process, than the made to size customized lenses can also no longer be used.
Only 7% of the tested second-hand frames are suitable for re-use. This is a relatively low percentage that does not outweigh the high shipping costs to Ghana. Not to mention the time involved in sorting though the second hand frames to determine which can be re-used. A one off contribution of €14 will achieve more than a donated pair of second hand glasses.
All in all, it works out to be far more economical to send new frames to Ghana, which are stronger and allows children to get a much longer use out of them.
